TV Shows and the Top of the Pops
One often overlooked aspect of the television industry is its ability to showcase the music of an aspiring recording artist. Many of the most popular shows on television today -- especially those geared towards the late teen to thirty-something crowd -- have the power to catapult an album onto the charts on the strength of simply being included on the soundtrack. One play on the right show can be the difference between remaining obscure and securing that number one album. Teen high school dramas, made for prime time soaps, even action adventure and horror programs are all working in conjunction with recording companies to get their artists onto the tube. Where once singer songwriters hoped to get a chance to perform live on one of the big evening variety shows, the savvy self-marketer now wants exposure on the most popular TV Shows of the day, because this is where their real target demographic tunes in.
For those who are not yet far enough along in their careers to have a finished album or song for placement there is always the ever growing number of singing and talent completions that audition across the country to give them a chance at national television exposure. As the different types of media closer together there is an ever increasing chance for artists to get that chance to strike it big. While once artists believed television exposure was limited to the video channels, many are beginning to realize that soundtrack exposure is the way forward.
